How to Care for Your Leather Duty Gear
Plain and Basketweave Leathers
Cleaning:
- Begin by gently removing any surface dirt with a soft, dry cloth.
- For more stubborn dirt or stains, use a slightly damp cloth and a mild leather cleaner. Apply in a circular motion and avoid soaking the leather.
- Allow the leather to air dry naturally, away from direct heat sources.
Conditioning:
- Conditioning these leathers is vital to keep them supple and prevent cracking. Use a quality leather conditioner, applying it sparingly with a soft cloth.
- After a few minutes, buff the leather gently with another clean cloth to remove excess conditioner and restore shine.
Protection:
- Protect classic and basketweave leathers from excessive moisture and direct sunlight, which can cause fading and drying out.
- Consider using a leather protectant spray to create a barrier against spills and stains. Ensure the product is suitable for full-grain leather.
Clarino™ (High-Gloss) Leather
Cleaning:
- Clarino™ (High-Gloss) leather can typically be cleaned with a damp cloth and mild soap for more significant soiling.
- Avoid abrasive cleaners or tools that can damage the surface.
- Dry with a soft cloth to prevent water spots.
Conditioning and Protection:
- While Clarino™ (High-Gloss) leather does not require conditioning, using a protective spray designed for synthetic leathers can enhance its durability.
- As with natural leathers, keep Clarino products away from prolonged exposure to direct sunlight and heat to prevent fading and degradation.
Additional Tips
- Always test care products on a small, inconspicuous area first to ensure they do not alter the leather’s appearance.
- Leather duty gear should be stored in a cool, dry place as leather material can be impacted when stored for long periods of time in hot environments.
- For items that see daily use, like garrison belts, rotating between several items can reduce wear and extend their life.
Caring for leather involves a balance of regular maintenance and preventative measures. By following these guidelines, you can extend the life of your leather gear for years.
